A New Life for a Classic Kit: Upgrading the 1/48 Tamiya J2M3 Raiden with ScaleCraft Studios Aftermarket Parts

Re-imagining the Raiden: The Start of Our Aftermarket Journey

The Tamiya 1/48 J2M3 Raiden is an icon in the scale modeling world. Though it’s an older kit, it holds a special place on the shelves of modelers worldwide. However, its age also means it lacks the modern enhancements we’ve come to expect in scale modeling today. That’s why we’ve chosen the Raiden as the first subject for our aftermarket range, Forge Craft. We're excited to breathe new life into this classic kit and take you along for the journey.

Why the Raiden?

The Raiden, known as "Thunderbolt" in Japanese, was a remarkable WWII aircraft designed for high-speed interception. Tamiya’s kit captures its essence well, but as we examined it, we noticed opportunities to add detail, accuracy, and personality that modern modeling techniques allow.

Choosing the Raiden wasn’t just about its historical significance. Its relative lack of existing aftermarket options makes it the perfect canvas for us to showcase what Forge Craft can bring to the table. We want to celebrate this classic while elevating it to meet the standards of today’s modeling enthusiasts.

Our Vision for the Raiden

Our goal is simple: to provide a set of enhancements that complement and elevate the Tamiya Raiden. From highly detailed resin cockpit and engine components to other subtle upgrades, we aim to give modelers the tools to build a show-stopping replica.

While resin parts are the focus for this project, we’re also exploring the idea of 3D-printed decals to add another layer of realism. We want these upgrades to not only improve the build experience but also inspire creativity and excitement in the process.

The Process Begins

Starting a project like this is equal parts exhilarating and challenging. Currently, we’re in the research phase, diving deep into historical references and studying the intricacies of the Raiden. The first step is to ensure every detail we design is as accurate as possible.

Our next step is 3D modeling. We’ll begin with key components like the cockpit, instrument panel, and landing gear details, ensuring every piece is engineered for precision and ease of use.

Building in Public

One thing we’re passionate about is sharing our journey. As we design and develop these parts, we’ll be posting updates, behind-the-scenes looks, and render previews on social media. We believe transparency not only helps us connect with the community but also ensures we’re creating parts you truly want to see.

We’re also planning giveaways and early testing opportunities where modelers can try out our parts and provide valuable feedback. It’s a way to involve the community and refine our designs before the official launch.

What Do You Want to See?

This project isn’t just about us—it’s about you, the modelers who will bring these kits to life. We’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • What details or features would you love to see in this upgrade set?
  • Are there specific challenges with the Tamiya Raiden you’d like us to address?

Let us know in the comments or through our social media channels. Your input will help shape the final product!

We’re thrilled to kick off this journey and can’t wait to see where it takes us. Stay tuned for updates, renders, and sneak peeks as we bring the Raiden to life with Forge Craft. Follow us on Facebook to stay in the loop and join the conversation.

Let’s re-imagine the Raiden together. 🌩️
